Meet the Three Democrats Who Could Flip the Republican-Led State Senate

Faith Winter

Representative Faith Winter is a Westminster resident who was elected to House District 35 in 2014, and before that, she served on Westminster City Council for seven years. Winter jumped into politics after spending more than a decade helping to elect other women. She was the founding executive director at Emerge Colorado, which works to elect women in state and local races, and she worked with the now-defunct White House Project, which does the same thing on a national level.

Although Winter isn't term-limited in the House, she decided to jump into the competitive Senate District 24 race, which comprises Westminster, Thornton and Northglenn. She's running to unseat Republican Senator Beth Martinez Humenik, who has held the district for one term.

Humenik was the first Republican to hold the seat in at least two decades, and during the previous two elections, in 2010 and 2014, the traditionally Democratic district has become more competitive. In 2010, then-incumbent Lois Tochtrop beat her Republican challenger by a single-digit margin, and in 2014, Humenik beat her Democratic opponents by just 1 percent. Based on the primary turnout, Winter has a substantial double-digit lead over Humenik.

Lesbian couple settles federal discrimination lawsuit with Cherry Creek Mortgage

A lesbian couple living in California is in the process of settling a federal discrimination lawsuit against Greenwood Village-based Cherry Creek Mortgage.

Judith Dominguez, a former employee of the company, and her wife Patricia Martinez initially filed the suit in August , alleging that the company canceled its spousal health insurance coverage and rescinded former coverage because of the couple’s sexual orientation.

On Dec. 7, lawyers in the case filed a notice of the settlement with the court. Lori Rifkin, who represents the couple, said she could not comment on the case because the settlement is in process. The lawyer for Cherry Creek Mortgage did not immediately respond to a phone call and email Friday.

Dominguez began work at Cherry Creek Mortgage’s Diamond Bar, Calif., branch in 2016. The couple had received health care coverage for most of the year.

But when Dominguez submitted her annual re-enrollment forms, the company told her it would not allow the plan because it only covered legal unions between one man and one woman, later explaining its decision by describing itself as a “Christian-based company,” according to the initial lawsuit.
