Gun Lake Casino expansion: Wetlands application lists plans for hotel tower, cinema and spa

Expansion of the casino has been a goal ever since the tribe scaled back original plans for the facility in 2010. Initial difficulty securing financing for part of the project pushed back the opening from fall 2010 to early 2011.

The tribe broke ground on the former Ampro Products site in Sept. 2009 and hoped to build a structure as large as 198,000 square-feet, but due to poor economic conditions, the building was scaled back to the existing 83,000 square feet.

A tribal spokesperson said a lawsuit by David Patchak seeking to invalidate the government’s decision to take land into trust for the casino is still slowly making its way through U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The U.S. Supreme Court last summer declined to block the lawsuit , saying that Patchak, a former Wayland Township trustee, was entitled to challenge the land-in-trust decision.

Although Shagonaby did not specifically reference expansion of the gaming facilities, in April, he said the tribe was exploring “numerous options for new amenities that would maintain viability in an increasingly competitive casino resort marketplace.”

Last summer, tribal officials opened the door to talk of expansion after refinancing $165 million in outstanding debt from original construction of the casino, located at 1123 129th Ave. in Wayland Township.

The casino brought in approximately $352 million in net electronic gaming receipts between its opening in Feb. 2011 and March 2013, when the latest revenue-sharing figures were reported. About $35 million of those profits have been paid to state and local governments, per the tribe's gaming contract.
