Banks must act on tracker mortgages to help customers and themselves

WHO remembers the stated reasons for putting the bank guarantee in place and then, subsequently, to give the Irish-owned banks €64bn in additional capital to cover their losses?

It was all so that we could have “a properly functioning banking system”. What does that mean? It was supposed to mean that there would be money coming out of the “hole-in-the-wall” machines when people put their cards in. That people’s cheques would be honoured. That people could get loans to buy houses, cars and holidays, to pay education fees and other things that are too large to pay at home and get paid back over time. That businesses would get overdrafts to tide them over while they waited to be paid, to allow them to buy stock. That they would get loans for larger investments that could not be made out of profits or savings.

Some of the obvious things have continued “as normal” but overall it hasn’t worked out too well, has it?

Stock Market at All-Time High; You Must Be at an All-Time High Too

There aren’t any housing specific reports this week, but stick around a couple weeks to hear how housing continues on the road to recovery. How exactly is the question?

Bloomberg Macro indicators have fallen to seven month lows as the S&P 500 sets record highs. That hasn’t happened since 2007. Macro declines, market goes up. Must be a coincidence it mirrors 2007 trend lines.

How is housing tied to the stock market? It’s not, the stock market is a casino playing with markers printed by Bernanke. The record highs aren’t indicative of an economy staggering below 3% GDP growth for the longest stretch since 1929. Say wasn’t the stock market near record highs in 1929 also? Coincidence or canary in the mine?

The only economic report this week regarding housing was home renovation spending which has fallen back to 2010 levels. Not good.

Interest rates continue to fall to new record lows making mortgage money the cheapest since the 1950s. Equity lines of credit are cheap.Does the drop in renovation spending indicate satisfied demand?

I have stock in American Home Mortgage and it declared bankruptcy. Can I recover anything?

I am still holding shares of American Home Mortgage which declared bankruptcy several weeks ago. The share price has plummeted and is almost worthless at this point. Do I continue to hold this position?

Before you sell and declare a loss in this financial year you should review (with an advisor) whether it is best to do that this financial year or next.

Busted, life inside the great mortgage meltdown

About this book
A veteran New York Times economics reporter, Ed Andrews was intimately aware of the dangers posed by easy mortgages from fast-buck lenders. Yet, at the promise of a second chance at love, he succumbed to the temptation of subprime lending and became part of the economic catastrophe he was covering. In surprisingly short order, he amassed a staggering amount of debt and reached the edge of bankruptcy. In Busted, Andrew bluntly recounts his misadventures in mortgages and goes one step further to describe the brokers, lenders, Wall Street players, and Washington policymakers who helped bring that money to his door. The result is a penetrating and often acerbic look at the binge and bust that nearly bankrupted the United States. Enabled by know-nothing complacency in Washington, Wall Street wizards used "collateralized debt obligations," "conduits," and other inscrutable financial "innovations" to put American home financing into hyperdrive. Millions of Americans abandoned the safety of thirty-year,...

Her initial mortgage was for $1 million and she estimates the current value of her home to be around $500,000. Szymoniak began fighting with her bank in June 2008, when she said it improperly sought to raise the interest rate on her loan, increasing her monthly payments by roughly $1,000. PROVIDENCE, R.
